Project Description Country: USA Location: Boise Total Budget: $6,500 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: General Summary: Swim training for less affluent 3rd graders at Whittier Elementary Last year we sponsored the Whittier School 3rd graders for the YMCA "Make a Splash" program. Apparently, since Covid, we have become the only benefactors for "Make a Splash" and the program would not have happened without our sponsorship Results have been 100% increase in levels of swimming skills, noticeable increase in confidence and self assurance. This was also noted by Whittier teachers. Since Drowning is the #2 cause of death among children in Idaho, we want to continue to support this program again this year. We pay YMCA and they bus the kids to the pool and teach the skills there. There are 10 separate lessons during the school year. Kyle Woods and Keith Masonheimer are liaison with the school. The Treasure Valley Family YMCA is a 501 (c) 3 Nonprofit Organization. Federal Tax ID number is 82-0200908 Whittier Elementary School is a Title One school with many underprivileged students. Boise SW Rotary Club has adopted the school for several projects. They are: 6th Grade - Graduation party at Wahoo. 5th Grade - Christmas lunch with our club at the Riverside, photos with Santa and small gifts. All club members attend and interact with the pupils. 4th Grade - We pay for bus transportation and arrange a tour of BSU to inspire students to think about attending College. 3rd Grade - Make a Splash, we sponsor the 3rd graders to learn to swim. This is our signature project and the biggest financial commitment of our club. To pay for all this, our club has a fundraiser; Rotary Luau, in which almost all of our club members participate by buying tickets, selling tickets, donating auction items, or bidding on auction items. Some of our fundraising committee members are Rotarians Nancy Miller, Mike Markley, Andrea Thornton, Marshall Baker and George Weissbeck. The principal of Whittier is our special guest at this event and speaks to the need and gratitude that the students have for our support. The YMCA credits Rotary on their website as a sponsor of Make A Splash: https://www.ymcatvidaho.org/about-us/make-a-splash/ Funds will be used for transportation and staffing. Transportation last year was $1374 and staffing was $5136, so that is our budget this year as well. Last year's invoice uploaded.
