Project Description

Region: North America

Country: Canada

Location: Moncton

Total Budget: $250,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

This project seeks to address food insecurity and homelessness through the development of a sustainable, community-run greenhouse that provides year-round food production and employment training for individuals transitioning out of homelessness. Led by [Rotary Club Name], in partnership with local shelters, vocational educators, and agricultural specialists, the project aims to reintegrate vulnerable individuals into society through structured support, skill-building, and community engagement.

The initiative includes:

Construction of a solar-powered greenhouse to grow high-yield, nutrient-dense produce suitable for local climate and market.

Agricultural and business training programs for at-risk and formerly homeless individuals, equipping them with practical skills in urban farming, produce handling, cooperative economics, and entrepreneurship.

Mentorship and life-skills education, including financial literacy, nutrition, and mental wellness support, fostering long-term reintegration.

Distribution of food to local food banks and low-income families, enhancing food security in the region.

The project will operate as a social enterprise, reinvesting proceeds into expanding training, wages, and support services, with a goal of becoming self-sustaining within three years.

---

🎯 Objectives:

Empower 25-40 individuals annually with skills and paid training.

Reduce local food insecurity by supplying fresh produce to over 500 people annually.

Create a replicable model that merges sustainable agriculture with social reintegration.

---

🔍 Alignment with Rotary Focus Area:

This initiative falls under the Community Economic Development area of focus by:

Building economic resilience for marginalized populations.

Promoting entrepreneurship and employment through training and cooperative farming.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
