Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Weld County/Greeley CO

Total Budget: $7,000

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Providing 70 sets of bedding for children in foster and kinship care in Weld County, Colorado.

Summary:

Greeley, Colorado Redeye Rotary's contribution, along with matching grant funding, will purchase approximately 70 bedding sets for kinship care and foster care children and youth. Each set will include "bed- in-a-bag" (pillow sham, comforter, flat sheet, fitted sheet), as well as a blanket and 1 standard pillow. Redeye membership will participate by acquiring the items, assembling them into sets, and distributing them to the children at Weld County Department of Human Services holiday parties. The Event Center at Island Grove Park in Greeley Colorado will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland for the celebrations, on December 7, 2022 for kinship care children and December 8, 2022 for foster care children.

Project Description:

Weld County Department of Human Services Foster Care program is dedicated to helping children from toddlers to teenagers in challenging situations grow, learn, thrive, achieve their full potential for a future of hope. As of May 2022, 309 children participated in the Weld County program, including kinship children who live with relatives, neighbors, or friends as well as foster children who live with foster parents. Weld County informs us that these children are in need of bedding.

Needs for foster care solutions arise in Weld County due to factors such as physical abuse, neglect, or biological parents' drug abuse. According to the National Foster Youth Institute: "on average, 40-50 percent of foster children in USA never complete high school. Over sixty six percent will be homeless, go to jail or become ill within one year of leaving the foster system at age 18. Only 50 percent have gainful employment by age 24. Girls in foster care are 600 times more likely than the general population to become pregnant before age of 21."

Parents, kinship care / foster care children and youth, caseworkers, and sponsoring community partners will participate in the Weld County holiday celebrations. In addition to donated gifts, the festivities will include holiday decorations, music, a catered meal and entertainment such as photos with Santa and carriage rides. As a community partner participating in the events, Redeye Rotary will have an opportunity to thank and honor the caseworkers, and those opening their hearts and homes to the children and youth in Weld County currently in kinship or foster care. Our members will assist with creating a memorable evening for the children and youth, who will share the excitement of choosing badly needed new bedding in a style of their choice. Redeye Rotary members will display an appropriate banner and possibly wear T-shirts with Rotary logo to enhance awareness of our involvement.
