Rotary Club: Soldotna Project Title: Oral History Preservation 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? This project provided complete equipment and continuing training for the preservation of local Soldotna area history while homestead-era participants are still alive. It will continue to provide historical preservation of video interviews, oral history in both audio and video form, as well as photographic preservation. Historical preservation and continuing training in oral history and equipment use will occur in the Soldotna, Alaska area but documents and materials will be stored at the Consortium Library for academic and research use. In addition, the curation and artifact preservation program of the Soldotna Historical Society and its museum and other functions has been augmented by the purchase of a suitable notebook computer and museum software as part of this program. Long-term project space has been donated by the local hospital. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 4,000 approximate Soldotna area residents. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Soldotna area residents benefit through the recordation of oral history and recollection while elderly participants are still alive. In addition, general area history will be preserved much more systematically on a long-term basis. In addition, academic researchers will benefit in the long term as such historical data will be collected in a manner suitable for long-term preservation in an academic research setting. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3+ 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Dale Bagley has taken the lead in coordinating this project, in working with academic and university personnel to devise a suitable interview protocol and technical program, and assists in training interviewers. Joseph Kashi researched and devised the equipment acquisition, in assembling and configuring computers, scanners, and cameras, and in training others in its use. Multiple members of Soldotna Rotary Club will undertake recorded interviews. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Soldotna Historical Society will take the lead in collecting oral history interviews and videos and in preserving and sharing these on a long-term basis. In addition, the Soldotna Historical Society major museum role has been automated and greatly augmented through museum equipment and software obtained through this grant. 7. Income
