Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Honduras

Location: Pimienta

Total Budget: $44,104

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

This project will support the second phase of a clean water project completed last year. A pipe system will be installed to bring clean water to 117 homes (700 people) in Las Casitas, a poverty-stricken section of the village of Pimienta. The city has a 250,000-gallon tank that is large enough to serve all residents, but the citizens of Las Casitas were unable to pay to have lines installed to their homes. The water they currently drink is from a failing well and is contaminated.

The residents of Las Casitas have pledged to assist with manual labor needed to install the system, and they will organize a water committee to insure that the system is well-maintained and repaired as needed. The residents will pay a minimal fee to create a fund that will be available for repairs when needed. These individuals recognize the benefits of providing clean water to their families and they are very committed to supporting the project and sustaining the water system.

The project is done in cooperation with Engineers Without Borders.

This project will require less than six months to complete.
