Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Uganda

Location: Kitanda, Bukomansimbi

Total Budget: $87,850

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

There are dire shortages of clean water in the District of Bukomansimbi, in Uganda. Working with local authorities and other partners, the Rotary Club (RC) of Bunga supported the first phase of the WASH project extending clean water in Butenga Kawoko, Bikomansimbi district. The RC is not embarking on the second phase in Mitigyeera parish under the district. This project will address safe water scarcity in Kitanda sub county, Bukomansimbi district focusing on 4 schools, Kitanda health centre and Kayanja trading centre between March and June 2025.

Official statistics (2014 Census) place the population of Kitanda sub-country at 28,455. This is estimated to have grown by at least 30%, since then, based on Bukomansimbi District population growth rates at Uganda Bureau of Statistics, placing it at about 37,000.

The 4 schools in Kitanda, including Lwamalenge Church of Uganda Primary School (437 learners), St. Henry's Ndalage Roman Catholic Primary School (720 learners), Brainway Junior School (424 learners), and St. Stephen's Bright Parents Junior School, Kayanja (526 learners) have a total learners' population of 2,107 based on Bukomansimbi District records.

The Kitanda Health Centre III (HC III), serves roughly 1,300 out-patients and 50 in-patients (maternity and infants) per month (based on district health information system).

The project will also connect piped water to Kayanja trading centre located in Mitigyeera parish with 1,352 households (with at least 7,600 inhabitants - based census estimates).

The water supply system will abstract water from a production well (borehole), that will be funded by the District Local Government of Bukomansimbi. The water reservoir of 50,000 litres will be located at the Kitanda sub county headquarters.

In summary the WASH project will provide access to safe water and better sanitation environment to over 2,000 learners, 1,350 patients (on a monthly basis) at the health centre and over 1,350 households in Kayanja trading centre.

The project is estimated to costs USD87,850 covering (a) Project Mgt ($2,973), (b) monitoring and stewardship ($1,318), (c) equipment supply and installation (pump, water tank, security system) ($43,731), (d) fixtures and installation (pump and guard houses, fencing) ($18,517), and (e) trenches, drainage and other infrastructure installations) (21,307). Current commitments and pledges amount to USD38,400 leaving a gap of USD49,446

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
